Research in Ritual, Secrecy, and Civil Society
The Bibliotheque Nationale- Paris, France
May 29-30, 2015
Convened by the journal Ritual, Secrecy, and Civil Society in cooperation with the Bibliotheque Nationale, the first World Conference on Fraternalism, Freemasonry, and History: Research in Ritual, Secrecy, and Civil Society, focuses on the study of ritual, secrecy, and civil society vis-à-vis the dynamics of Masonic scholarship around the world. The conference aims to explore how civil society, secrecy, and ritual have been important elements during different episodes of local and world histories, and indeed still are.
The conference will be held bi-annually in Paris, and hopes to open new doors while promoting multilingual and multicultural scholarship in areas such as, the relations between such Masonic-related subjects as the Companionnage, guilds, friendly societies, and Greek fraternities.
The call for papers is now open, and perspectives on and interpretations of all time periods and geographic zones are welcome. Paper and panel proposals should be submitted to Whitney Shepard, Registrar of the Conference, at wshepard@ipsonet.org. Papers accepted for presentation will be published by Westphalia Press in three collections: Vital Masonic Scholarship in the 21st Century, New Research in Secret Societies, and European Scholarship in Secrecy and Ritualism. Conference: The Archaeology of Gatherings
The Archaeology of Gatherings
Institute of Technology, Sligo, Ireland
25th to 27th October 2013
Conference Abstract
The Archaeology of Gatherings is a thematic international
conference to bring together a range of speakers from different disciplines
including both academics and professionals. The aim is to explore the material culture and psychology
behind gatherings of people. With
2013 being the year of 'The Gathering' this theme was chosen to examine why
people over millennia have come together, often in large numbers, for religious
assemblies, social interaction, to exchange commodities and ideas, along with
other reasons such as farewells, wakes, political opposition, inaugurations
etc.

Dr. John Cooper, Grand Master Grand Lodge of California, 2014
Distinguished Speaker:
Dr. Roger Dachez, President Masonic Institute of France
Although Freemasonry prides itself as being universal, it is divided along historic cultural lines based on sex, religion, and - in some cases - ethnicity and race. This conference will examine the uniqueness of these streams of Freemasonry, as well as what they have in common.
•Are the divisions of Freemasonry into a male-only fraternity, a female-only fraternity, and a mixed gender fraternity helpful or harmful to its universality?
•Is it possible for a form of Freemasonry which requires a belief in a Supreme Being as a condition of membership to be compatible with a form of Freemasonry which has no such requirement?
•Have historic forms of Freemasonry which originated as a result of racial distinctions, such as Prince Hall Freemasonry, make a positive contribution to the universality of Freemasonry?
•Can there be an organizational framework within which all expressions of Freemasonry work in harmony?

ASE 2014 Conference Call for Papers
Association for the Study of Esotericism
Fifth International Conference
http://www.aseweb.org/
Call for Papers: Esoteric Practices: Theories, Representations, and Methods
June 19-22, 2014
The Association for the Study of Esotericism (ASE) is seeking paper and panel proposals for its fifth International North American Conference on Esotericism to be held at Colgate University, in Hamilton, New York.
ASE is seeking proposals for papers exploring the many dimensions of Western esoteric practices, including theories, representations and methods of practice viewed from cultural, practical, religious and aesthetic fields of inquiry. ASE encourages papers that address the conference theme in terms of
diverse types of representation, including arts and literature, as well as methods that reflect specific theories of esotericism, either historically or in a contemporary context. ASE invites proposals on magic, alchemy, astrology, ritual practice, mysticism, spiritualism, occultism, hermeticism, neo-paganism, contemporary esoteric movements and teachers, Asian influences on Western traditions, and other relevant topics. ASE is also interested in panels specifically on mysticism, contemplative practice, and other topics related to the conference theme. ASE regards esotericism as an interdisciplinary field of research and we invite scholars from all disciplines to share their research and writings in support of a cross-fertilization of perspectives. ASE welcomes scholars from a wide range of areas, including anthropology, American studies, art history, history, intellectual history, religious studies, literature, philosophy, psychology, medieval studies, sociology-the full range of academic disciplines and fields. The deadline for panel or paper proposal submission is January 15th 2014.
If you wish to submit a paper proposal or a thematically focused panel proposal (with three presenters and short descriptions included) for review and possible presentation at the conference, please send it by regular email to ASE2014Conference@gmail.com
No attachments, please: simply copy and paste your abstract into plain text email. Individual abstracts should be limited to one or two paragraphs, and must indicate academic affiliation and/or other academic qualifications. Independent scholars are welcome to submit proposals. Please note that the previous conference was at maximum capacity, so it is best to submit your proposal sooner rather than later. ASE hopes to post a preliminary list of accepted proposals early in 2014. Possible venues for the publication of conference papers include the book series Studies in Esotericism (this will be the fourth volume in the series).
For more information on the ASE, see their website at www.aseweb.org
An additional announcement will be forthcoming on the 2014 ASE conference, with information on location, hotels, and conference registration.
About the Association for the Study of Esotericism
In May, 2002, the journal Esoterica hosted the First North American Symposium on the Study of Esotericism at Michigan State University. There, the invited participants created a new scholarly organization, the Association for the Study of Esotericism [ASE], along with a mission statement and a set of goals. This organization subsequently was incorporated in August, 2002, as a recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The primary mission of this organization is to support excellence in scholarship and to foster communication among scholars who, though their work originates from a wide range of fields, find esotericism a common theme of their research. In this groundbreaking collection, leading scholars in this emerging field explore how nature can be understood in a wide range of esoteric religious contexts. Included here are articles on subjects ranging from alchemy and panpsychism to music, Appalachian folk magic, and new religions. Esotericism, Religion, and Nature illuminates the way that nature is understood by major esoteric figures and traditions. Taken together, these articles shed new light on the connections between humanity, nature, and religion. Authors include Joscelyn Godwin, Wouter Hanegraaff, Lee Irwin, Richard Smoley, Arthur Versluis, M. E. Warlick, and many others. The second in a series of volumes on Western esotericism, this book emerged from international academic conferences held by the Association for the Study of Esotericism.
Their third volume in the series Studies in Esotericism is now in process. Esotericism, Religion, and Politics will be published in 2012.

Please visit the website of their sister organization, the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE), for information about other academic events in this field. http://www.esswe.org/

Conference: Ways of Gnosis
Ways of Gnosis:
Mystical and Esoteric Traditions
from Antiquity to the Present Time
10-13 April 2013.
All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature
Association for the Study of Esotericism and Mysticism
in collaboration with
Institute "Russian Anthropological School" of the Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow), the Research Centre for Esotericism and Mysticism at Russian Christian Academy for the Humanities (St. Petersburg), the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE), the Scientific-Educational Centre "Free Philosophical Society"
and supported by
the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE),
International academic symposium
One of the most important elements of mystical and esoteric traditions is the phenomenon of gnosis, defined as prophetic knowledge with soteriological value for its bearers. The gnostic worldview, its symbols and motives can be found in masterpieces of Western art and literature. Over the past two millenniums, Western spiritual culture has been consistently influenced by gnostic thought, and it is now difficult to imagine the history of Western art, literature, science, philosophy and religion without gnosis, that has certain parallels in structure and ideas with some Eastern cultures (for example, India).
The international academic symposium "Ways of Gnosis" plans to examine this phenomenon from different points of view (phenomenological, hermeneutical, and historical); to show its real significance in Eastern and Western mystical and esoteric traditions; to investigate the meeting of worldviews in "Alexandrian gnosis" and the interrelation of "gnostic" currents to each other; to point out the influence of different aspects, symbols, and images of gnostic traditions in daily life; to show the historical continuity of gnostic ideas in the European cultural tradition; to compare different forms of gnosis in Eastern and Western culture; to elucidate different approaches to the phenomenon of gnosis, and, finally, to demonstrate the role of gnostic doctrines in the history of Russian culture.
This symposium brings together two regular conferences previously held separately - "Russia and Gnosis," organized by the Library for Foreign Literature (Moscow) and "Mystic and Esoteric Movements in Theory and Practice," the annual conference of the Association for the Study of Esotericism and Mysticism (ASEM). Thus, the symposium simultaneously hosts the Sixth International Conference "Mystic and Esoteric Movements in Theory and Practice" and the Tenth "Russia and Gnosis" Conference. There will be one joint plenary session and one joint thematic session; however, the two conferences will otherwise have separate programs.
During the symposium, Masonic relics and manuscripts from the Russian collection of the "Museum of Freemasons' Symbols and History" will be exhibited by the "Free Philosophical Society", which will also organize a round-table discussion about "Traditions of Freemasonry and Its Implications for Today".
Working languages: Russian and English. Translation into English will be provided for those not fluent in Russian.
President of the Organizing Committee: Ekaterina Genieva, Head of the Library for Foreign Literature (Moscow).

Masonic Literary Festival in Brazil
As part of what the Hedge Mason will make an ongoing effort to cover, this post notes an upcoming event in Brazil concerning new research and scholarship on Freemasonry: The First Masonic Literary Festival. The festival is one day only, Saturday, July 7th from 7am - 7pm at the Masonic Palace of the Grand Orient of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro.
The highlighted presentation features William Almeida de Carvalho who will speak on "The Rise and Fall of Freemasonry in Brazil" which will be restricted to members of the craft.
William Almeida de Carvalho is a former Director of the Library of the Grand Orient of Brazil, former Secretary of Education and Culture of the GODF-GOB, the author of several books on Freemasonry in Brazil, member of the Research Lodge Quatuor Coronati of London, and of the Scottish Rite Research Society. Currently he is President of the Masonic Academy of Arts of the FD, Treasurer of the Masonic Academy of Brazil and Masonic Academy of Arts of Paraiba, and has a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Panthéon-Sorbonne.
His most recent published book demonstrates that masons in Brazil are engaged in research going far beyond that with which the fraternity in North America is familiar. It is entitled "Freemasonry, the Slave Trade and the Bank of Brazil" (São Paulo: Editora Madras, 2010).

Fifth International Conference: Mystic and Esoteric Movements in Theory and Practice
HISTORY AND DISCOURSE
Historical and Philosophical Aspects of
the Study of Esotericism and Mysticism
2-5 December, 2011 - St Petersburg (Russia)
Keynote lecture: Dr. Prof. Wouter J. Hanegraaff (University of Amsterdam)
The historical approach plays a highly important role in the study of mystical and esoteric movements as all other approaches are to an extent reliant on it. The extraordinary importance of historical analyses requires, however, special attention. It is well-known that over the course of the history of western culture mystical and esoteric phenomena have been to a great extent excluded from the cultural mainstream and have often been oppressed by dominant ‘exoteric’ discourses. This is because historians of esotericism and mysticism are often confronted with the discursive nature of historical witnesses and descriptions and are called for "not confusing our constructs with historical reality” (W. J. Hanegraaff). Could a supposedly realistic description of some esoteric phenomenon merely be a result of polemical discourse? Do clichés or even pure inventions appear in place of expected historical analysis? How do discursive formations influence the way mystical and esoteric aspects of religious culture have been perceived and represented during a particular period of time in history? How can a historian ‘separate the wheat from the chaff’ in (self)descriptions of mystical and esoteric phenomena? These and other related issues still call for more awareness and conceptualization within historical and philosophical research of deviant religious and cultural phenomena.
