At a Perpetual Distance: Universal Freemasonry and its Historical Divisions: Agenda & RSVP Information

The Roosevelt Center is developing as a network of scholars and students in California and more broadly in North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe and across the globe. The specific purpose of the Roosevelt Center is to promote research, conversation, education and communication in general around the study of civil society and/or Freemasonry. Support is given to faculty, students and projects related to the study of Freemasonry and democratic civil society around the world. The Roosevelt Center approaches Freemasonry as an association representative historically of civil society as it developed from the eighteenth century onwards. The approach at the globally networked Center is multi-dimensional. It involves a cultural, comparative and global study of civil society. It also concerns the meaning that Freemasonry could assume in private and public life, as well as it examines Masonic thought in a variety of historical and contemporary settings.

Work at the Center/network/forum is intended to engage an array of questions and approaches in the arts, humanities and social sciences relevant to civil society, including cultural studies, the study of symbolism, ritual and theater, aesthetics, affective and cognitive neuroscience, comparative religion, the history and advance of science, moral and political philosophy, new approaches in historical geography, and the 300 year history, and prehistory, of modern Freemasonry since the Enlightenment.

AT A PERPETUAL DISTANCE: UNIVERSAL FREEMASONRY AND ITS HISTORICAL DIVISIONS" AN INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC CONFERENCE, MARCH 23, 2014, 1:00 TO 5:00 P.M. (PST)

Although Freemasonry prides itself as being universal, it is divided along historic cultural lines based on sex, religion, and--in some cases--ethnicity, and race.  This conference will examine the uniqueness of these streams of Freemasonry, as well as what they have in common.

• Are the divisions of Freemasonry into a male-only fraternity, a female-only fraternity, and a mixed gender fraternity helpful of harmful to its universality?

• Is it possible for a form of Freemasonry which requires belief in a Supreme Being as a condition of membership to be compatible with a form of Freemasonry which has no such requirement?

• Have historic forms of Freemasonry which originated as a result of racial distinctions, such as Prince Hall Freemasonry, make a possible contribution to the universality of Freemasonry?

• Can there be an organizational Framework within which all expressions of Freemasonry work in harmony?

Aunque la masonería se enorgullece de ser universal, se dividió a lo largo de líneas culturales históricas basadas en el sexo, la religión, y - en algunos casos - la etnicidad y la raza. Esta conferencia examinará la singularidad de estas corrientes de la masonería, así como lo que tienen en común.

• ¿Las divisiones de la masonería en un único varón fraternidad, una fraternidad sólo para mujeres, y una fraternidad de género mixto útil de perjudicial para su universalidad?

• ¿Es posible que una forma de masonería que requiere la creencia en un Ser Supremo, como condición de membresía ser compatible con una forma de masonería que no tiene tal requisito?

• ¿Pueden las formas históricas de la masonería que se originaron como consecuencia de las distinciones raciales, como La Francmasonería Prince Hall, contribuir a la universalidad de la masonería?

The traditional Modern Rite in North America and the Caribbean

The Modern Rite has issued Patents for North America and the Caribbean

The structure of the Universal Masonic Union of the Modern Rite (UMURM), walks slowly, at its own pace and attempts to remain aloof to controversy.

It has been suggested by some that the renewal of the Traditional Modern Rite will not come from Europe,but rather would take place on another continent such as in the Americas. The Rite will continue walking until there comes a day when rejuvenated and modernized it will be well adapted to new forms and visions. What all masonry needs now are new forms and visions, as the old does not seem able to reverse the (sometimes not so slow) decline.

It should be the desire of all masons to embrace a plural and critical view, knowing that all that information is a tool for the rest, so that everyone understands and handle it properly.

THis is why the UMURM, and the Academy, and specific individuals within these structures, working with brethren in the US and the Caribbean, developing through knowledge and relationships they have done with some brothers from the USA, have been able to raise the Modern Rite in the USA.

The Modern Rite in North America and the Caribbean support the Barcelona Charter drafted in June 2011 and are part of the Union Masonic Rite of Modern World (UMURM).

The Western Hemisphere is now organized for practicing Modern Rite according to the great traditions and heritage as preserved by the Masonic Supreme Council of the Modern Rite of Brazil, whose work takes place in an unbroken chain from 1842 to today , and whose rich heritage was rooted, long before that date, in the soil of the Modern Rite. The priority is now to work at making available a body of literature concerning the Modern Rite, which in all respects, is simply nonexistent in English. Our brothers in Cuba have an embarrassment of riches, thanks to the efforts of the Spanish in recent years. We plan to produce educational materials on historical topics, as well, and this is of immediate importance, literature appropriate to the needs of researchers and related rituals, ethics and traditions of the Modern Rite. Our commitment to research, education, and courteous debate, whether in or outside the box, and our need to translate the ritual, make a goal like this one an essential objective. We will make sure to share intellectual and moral values  and perspectives of the Modern Rite, rituals and ethics. (...)


This open letter announces that on July 27, 2012 the Supreme Conselho do Modern Rite based in Brazil, under the distinguished leadership of M. '. I. '. H. '. José María Bonachi Batalla, Sovereign Grand Inspector General, working in the Valley of Rio de Janeiro, granted the Letter Patent for the Orders of Wisdom I ∞, II ∞, III ∞ and IV ∞ Order of Modern Rite to the Grand Chapter General of the Modern Rite of North America and the Caribbean.

The General Grand Chapter of the Modern Rite of North America and the Caribbean will be working with the Orders of Wisdom, Brazilian rituals, to be translated from Portuguese.

In addition, the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the Mixed Modern Rite of North America and the Caribbean, working in the Orient of Philadelphia, it is a great honor to announce on behalf of their brothers and sisters, in the United States and Cuba (where several lodges under the lead of Logia Anáhuac are already working with more to come), this Symbolic Power has received its charter from the Grand Mixed Lodge of the Equatorial Andes,  from the hands of M. '. I. '. Hna. '. Olga Vallejo Rueda, S. '. C. '. Sublime Council of Modern Rite for Ecuador. The patent was received on July 12, 2012.

Dame Frances Yates a Sovereign Chapter of the Modern French Rite, Valley of Los Angeles in California, USA

The Dame Frances Yates Chapter of the Modern French Rite working in the Valley of Los Angeles affirms the wisdom and global relevance of the Charter of Barcelona declared with wide international participation on June 12, 2011 in Spain. The Chapter argues the declaration in Barcelona, and other communiques, are of central importance in preparing the way for the introduction of the Modern French Rite, the Rite of Foundation, to North America in the 21st Century.

Dame Frances Amelia Yates (1899-1961) was an English historian who taught for many years at the Warburg Institute of the University of London. She wrote on the occult and Neoplatonic philosophies of the Renaissance. Geordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition and The Rosicrucian Enlightenment are among her major works.

The Salon, based in Los Angeles uses Meetup.com social media. The Salon on Freemasonry is open equally to men and women, and to all with a disciplined curiosity. Meetup.com is a global technology, intended to link people in face-to-face meetings at a local site. Nevertheless visitors will be able to find links and other information at this site helpful in the study of Freemasonry and civil society without being a local member. Under study is the use of wireless technology to offer live links during a portion of the local Meetup. This would allow members to link up live and hear focused discussion and presentations from around the world! The Salon meets near UCLA.
